Icicle is one of the most exciting names in Drum and Bass at the moment. Along with shogun labelmates Spectrasoul and Alix Perez, he is helping to push a deeper aspect of the drum and bass culture. The sound lies somewhere between the worlds of liquid and filthy rolling bass. It's hard to pigeonhole such fresh beats - so I won't. All I can say is that it's chilled yet raging, clean yet filthy, dark and moody but somehow also light and breezy. It's a world of contradictions.
Looking back through his releases you'd be hard pressed to find something you don't find agreeable. Icicle (aka Jeroen Snik) is a native of Holland and has been producing drum and bass since he was 15. It's pretty obvious that he's able to construct a decent tune and that's since 2007 he's been releasing his music through a series of respectable labels. Critical Recordings, Med School, SGN:LTD, Soul:r and Renegade Hardware have all seen fit to release Icicle tunes. From this year Icicle will be one of the Shogun Audio family committing to releases on Shogun in the future.
The main reason for talking about Icicle at this point in time though, is the release of his 'Cold Fear EP'. Released on Shogun and available from the 07th December, this is sure to be another Jewel in the crown of Shogun Audio's back-catalogue. I won't go to much into the finer nuances of the album, all I will say is that it's damn good and Noisia feature on one of the tracks. It's still very much in the vein of what we've come to expect from Icicle; beautiful production, heavy bass, a little bit of filth and general rolling bliss. I urge you to give it a listen before the Icicle thaws - because this EP is hot.
